Apple and leeks winter salad (German)



The leek is a very popular type of mild onion both in Germany and in our homeland, Romania (especially in Oltenia). This winter salad is typically German, made of ingredients that traditionally are stored well through the winter. It's very easy to make and ready in 10-15 minutes. It has an interesting sweet-sour taste and goes along well next to main dishes of meat, boiled vegetables and more. 





Ingredients (serves 2):
  • 1 medium leek (white and light green part)
  • 1 big apple (red for best flavor combination, optionally 2 apples if you dislike the onion taste)
  • 4-5 tablespoons of cream (1/3 of a glass)
  • a gurgle of olive oil
  • a pinch of salt
  • some freshly ground pepper
  • a big sprinkle of Worcester(shire) sauce (about 1 tablespoon, may be replaced with fresh lemon juice)


Wash the leek and the apple and prepare a salad bowl. Start by finely chopping the leek, after removing and tossing away its leaves:

Chop it into finer pieces. Put it in the salad bowl. Continue by finely chopping the apple, after tossing its seeds and core (optionally the skin too):

When you're done, add the apple pieces to the salad bowl next to the chopped leek:

Put the cream in a glass (or cup or little bowl). Add the salt, pepper and olive oil:

Add the Worcester sauce:

Mix everything in the glass using a spoon and add it to the minced apple and leek:

Mix the salad altogether. It's ready. Dig in!
